Making the cut: Blenheim salon owner Rochelle Stevenson prepares for a visit from leading Kiwi hairdresser Paul Serville on Monday.
A leading New Zealand hairdresser is making a special visit to a Blenheim salon to help raise funds for hosting a hairdressing competition in town for the first time in 18 years.
Celebrity stylist Paul Serville will be stopping off at Beyond The Fringe in Redwood Village on Monday to give hairdressers from Marlborough and Nelson a masterclass before taking part in a Q&A session.
Money raised from the event will be pumped into hosting the Nelson-Marlborough regional Fashion Hair Design Awards 2011 at the Clubs of Marlborough on August 7.
Beyond the Fringe owner Rochelle Stevenson, who lobbied to have the contest held in Blenheim, added that she was lucky to bag the famous hairdresser for the one-off visit.
"Normally this sort of appearance would cost thousands of dollars but one of our girls used to work with Paul so gave him a call to see if he would come down," Ms Stevenson said. "It is a big deal getting him to Blenheim, so we decided to throw it open to all the other salons in Marlborough and Nelson."
The workshop, from 11am to 2pm, will start with Mr Serville talking about how he grew from a junior to an award-winner, before demonstrating his scissor skills and taking questions from the floor.
"We are hoping to raise $3000 or $4000 as holding these competitions come at a cost," Ms Stevenson said. "I'm sure Paul could easily draw a big enough crowd but it has been a bit last-minute as we only decided last week to open it up to other salons."
The competition in August will consist of eight events from cutting, colouring, men's, women's to long hair styling, starting at noon and finishing at 6pm.
"I think we should get a really good public response and there will be quite a bit of snipping and cutting on the day," Ms Stevenson said.
