www.MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk polled 1,814 women aged 18 and over from around the UK, asking them questions surrounding how they usually prepare for the beach when summer comes around.
Respondents taking part in the study were initially asked, Do you ever diet in order to prepare your bikini body for the summer? to which two thirds, 68%, of respondents answered yes.
These respondents were then asked how long their diets usually lasted. The majority, 54%, admitted to usually giving up on their diet after just one week, whilst just a fifth, 19%, admitted that they usually fulfilled their diet target.
The respondents who admitted to giving up on their diets after just one week were then asked to state the main reasons why they tended to give up. According to the results, the top 5 reasons were as follows:
1) Dont have the willpower 31%
2) Dont see difference in weight/body - 23%
3) Diet food boring 21%
4) Dont feel supported by others 14%
5) Social life conflicts 10%
Of the respondents who said that they give up on diets because they dont feel supported, 35% explained that their relatives/ work colleagues dont help by eating normal food around them, whilst 33% admitted that they found it easier to diet with someone else to keep up their motivation.
The study also revealed that women who aim to lose weight before the summer want to lose an average of 7.2 pounds before they reveal their bikini body on the beach.
Furthermore, those who admitted to summer dieting were asked why they wanted to do so. Just over a third, 36%, of the respondents said that they didnt feel comfortable going on holidays with their winter weight, whilst under a quarter, 26%, admitted that they wanted a lookalike body, similar to some female celebrities.
A further 19% admitted to feeling pressure to do so by their relatives/ work colleagues who were actually doing one, whilst 16% said that they wanted to counteract the weight that they believed theyd gain on holiday.
Andy Barr, Marketing Director of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, commented on the findings:
Most people, men and women alike, feel that theyd like to lose a few pounds before they hit the beach, but it was surprising to see that the majority give up on diets after just one week. Dieting can be tricky, particularly if life commitments get in the way, but I suppose it takes a lot of willpower and support from others to succeed. Instead of dieting, as many women dont need to; we would recommend finding some great swimwear that compliments your shape, as this can be a great confidence booster on the beach. Dressing right can do wonders for your self-esteem, and there are plenty of styles out there to suit every figure!
