Nikki is the face of the New SLS suncare range
A Newspoll survey* has revealed that 62% of Australians believe it is safe to spend some time in the sun at the beach without wearing sunscreen before starting to cause skin damage. Combating this, Surf Life Saving Australia wants to remind beachgoers that there is no such thing as safe tanning and this summer, sun safety is a priority.
To help Australians face the beach safely this summer, in the typically harsh Australian sun, Surf Life Saving (SLS) today launches a new SLS Sunscreen range, providing added protection from the experts on Australian beaches.
The launch of the sunscreen range and the public safety campaign aims to educate Australians about sun safety when at the beach. The message is simple, there is no such thing as safe tanning at the beach without sunscreen.
Medical communicator, Dr John D’Arcy, explains that too many Australians are still unaware of the dangers of the Australian sun, the correct safe skin protection methods at the beach and most importantly that unprotected UV exposure will cause skin damage.
To assist with raising awareness of skin safety at the beach television personality and the face of the new Surf Life Saving Sunscreen campaign, Nikki Phillips, is speaking out about a recent skin cancer scare she experienced and urging all Australians to be careful at the beach this summer and wear sunscreen at all times.
Nikki said, “This summer I’m partnering up with Surf Life Saving in the hope to raise further awareness of skin safety at the beach. I had a recent skin cancer scare and it really drummed in to me that no one is safe from the harsh Australian sun, no matter what skin type you are. If you’re not wearing sunscreen and other protection, you’re at risk of skin damage.”
“It is the nature of my job that I spend a lot of time outdoors and in the sun. When I was told by a doctor some months ago that a freckle on my shin was a serious concern, I realised just how important it is to be vigilant about sunscreen application.
“This summer Surf Life Saving is launching a fantastic new product line which is perfect for Australia’s harsh summer sun. I’m really excited to be supporting this Australian organisation.”
Bricks for Bears
"Bear baiting in Pakistan is the world's most savage blood sport. A bear, with claws blunted and teeth removed, is tied to a post in the centre of a stadium and set upon by dogs. When the fight looks like it is about to become fatal, it is stopped.
But only to give the exhausted bear time to rest before facing the dogs again.
Sometimes he will endure as many as seven fights in one day. All of this takes place in the name of 'sport'
But bear baiting is no sport. It is animal cruelty. The bears suffer terrible injuries and receive inadequate treatment, resulting in ongoing pain and permanent scarring. Away from the ring their misery continues. Supposed to roam for 20km a day in the wild, they are kept in confinement and receive poor diet and care.
Bear baiting is illegal in Pakistan, but the fights continue. So does the campaign by the World Society for the Protection of Animals to put a stop to this cruelty. Since 2001 we have worked with our member society the Bio-resource Research Centre towards our goal of an end to bear baiting.
We began by building our Kund Park sanctuary to take in the bears confiscated from fights. So far we have rescued over 40 bears. We have been able to stop 80% of fights from taking place. We are educating the public through raising awareness in mosques and during infotainment events. And we have developed an alternative livelihood program to enable a sustainable end to the bear-owning tradition.
In 2010 we are at a critical stage - so near and yet still not quite in reach of our goal. Bricks for Bears is the next step in our campaign to bring an end to bear baiting in Pakistan."
